Baptized as the ugliest car in the world at the Paris Salon in 1948, it became an object of desire, contrary to the critics' opinions. During its 41 years of production, nearly 4 million cars were produced in factories around the world. Today, this car holds an almost cult status and is prized by collectors. The Charleston, having been presented in October 1980 as a one-season "special edition" was incorporated into the regular range in July 1981 in response to its extraordinary success. By changing the carburetor to achieve 29 hp (22 kW), a top speed of 115 km/h (71 mph) was achieved. Other changes were a new rear-view mirror and inboard disc brakes at the front wheels.
